International Program, 4 to 14 July, 2023, Ulaanbaatar and Dundgobi Province, Mongolia

Lost Rivers – Sound, Motion, Vision 10-Day Lab will be organized by Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association, in partnership with Nomadic Red Corner International Artist Residency, 976 Art Gallery, Blue Sun Contemporary Art Center, Khargislal Theater and M.A.R.S Artist Residency.

The program was initiated with the aim to raise public awareness on the water scarcity and pollution in Mongolia and their impacts on the environment, culture and lives of ordinary people. The project is made to re-establish a resonance of old wisdoms and to re-educate our eye towards the nature, through organization of creative workshops, striking performances, media works and the music.

The Lost Rivers shall facilitate collaboration between 30 artists from USA, UK, Austria, France, Germany, Australia, Canada, Taiwan and Mongolia, engaged in various disciplines such as sound, media, performance, dance, music and film, by creating lab-like environment, so artists can exchange ideas, organize workshops, exhibitions and performances together focusing on the water issues.

Events and exhibitions will be open for the public and organized in indoor spaces, artist residencies and unusual places, such as abandoned house, dry and dusty residential areas of Ger districts of Ulaanbaatar and Ikh Gazriin Chuluu, Dundgobi province. All places shall have/carry spirit/nature of lost river. The project was inspired by Tuvan singer Sainkho Namtchylak’s performance Lost River II. Her performance depicts the rage of mountain spirit over the loss of its springs.

First names of artists are announced, including Sainkho Namtchylak (Tuvan singer based in Vienna), Shu Lea Cheang (Taiwanese American media artist and filmmaker, based in Paris), Kaffe Mathews (British sound artist, composer, based in Berlin), Diana Chester (American sound and media artist based in Sydney), Fabian Cohn (Swiss choreographer, based in Berlin), Charwei Tsai (Taiwanese multimedia artist), Davaajargal Tsaschikher (Mongolian sound and media artist), Enkhjargal Ganbat (Mongolian performance artist) and Maria Dirneder (Austrian sound artist).

Lost Rivers – Sound, Motion, Vision 10-Day Lab is curated by Gantuya Badamgarav, Founding Director of Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association, Nomadic Red Corner International Artist Residency and 976 Art Gallery.
