Established 100 years ago, Tsagaandelger Soum is a secondary administrative subdivision in the Gobi region, located 200 km south of Ulaanbaatar city. Soum covers an area of 340.400 hectares, with over 1,000 population, out of which 400 live in the administrative center. The center has a secondary school, public hospital, kindergarten, culture center, post office, veterinary hospital, and Khan Bank branch.
Considered as a smallest Soum of Mongolia, Tsagaandelger belongs to the steppe zone of Mongolia. Animal husbandry is the main source of livelihood and employment of the people living here. As of the end of 2024, there are 114.470 livestock, including 560camels, 6.830 horses, 4.250 cattle, 60.540 sheep, and 42.290 goats. The cultures and economic activities of nomadic people living in Deren soum area have been severely affected by climate changes during the last decades, which led 35 percent of its population move to other places in search for the better life. Overbreeding of animals has also contributed to the severity of water scarcity in this area.
