CORNELIA KONRADS (GERMANY)

Born 1957 in Wuppertal, Germany, Cornelia studied philosophy and cultural science. She is practicing art since 1998, focusing on site specific sculpture and installation. Cornelia created permanent and temporary works for public spaces, sculpture parks and private collections, participating in sculpture and land art projects in Europe, Asia, Australia, America, and Africa.

Between nature and culture, Cornelia Konrads’ works are always in dialogue with the place that hosts them, its architecture, topography, flora and history. She is inspired by forms present in the landscape, divert them and reveal their poetic, comic or mysterious aspect. Her in situ installations, permanent or ephemeral, aim to create unstable moments, spaces of uncertainty close to catastrophe, that humorously defy the laws of gravity and construction. Cornelia’s reflection on Nomad Spirit:

The old conflict between nomads and settlers currently seems to have been decided in favor of the settlers. But we also start to realize, that the settlers‘ greedy lifestyle leads into a threat for all living beings, including the human. I wonder, if the Nomad Spirit does not hold some important lessons for our future, due to the nomad‘s understanding of natural cycles, their renunciation of fences, walls and paved soil, carefull use of resources, less production of waste. Yet I‘m aware that my ideas of „nomadic life“ are based on second-hand information and a lot of romantic ideals.

What is the reality of nomads‘ life in the present situation? How does the Nomad Spirit manifest and transform? My work would reflect on this questions.

Its final form depends on the site and available materials. I would like to work with everyday objects, material and ways of construction, related to the life of nomads – preferably with recycling material and discarded things, gathered with the help of local communities. A place should be created to commemorate and celebrate the Nomad Spirit and to think about the challenges it has to meet.
