ABOUT NOMADIC RED CORNER

Nomadic Red Corner is a collaborative project between Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association and Art Space 976+, initiated with the aim to bring art closer to the residents of the Ger districts of Ulaanbaatar city. Today Ger districts are home to nearly 800,000 people, majority of them are rural-urban migrants and low-income families. The districts lie on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar city, have limited access to utilities and infrastructure and lacks street lighting, pedestrian roads, green parks, and public spaces. The Nomadic Red Corner team believes that art can bring positive changes to the community cultures and mindsets.

Since its inception in 2020, Nomadic Red Corner has been organizing various artistic projects and events and creative community development programs to dispel negative assumptions about Ger districts and to create a more attractive and friendly environment for its residents and visitors. Several artsy neighborhoods were created in Chingeltei, Sukhbaatar and Bayanzurkh districts, covering around 24.000 sq.m areas, where artists, art students and volunteers painted streets and created artworks in public spaces. For implementing its projects, Nomadic Red Corner received fundings from EUNIC, Goethe Institute, Ministry of Culture of Mongolia, Alliance Francois, The Embassy of the United States, Sukhbaatar District Government and collaborated with artists community, Magic Land Community Center, teachers at the International School of Ulaanbaatar and volunteers.

As a part of the initiative, Nomadic Red Corner – International Artist Residency was established in 2021, with the support from the Goethe International Relief Fund. Residency is settled now in the courtyard of the Magic Land Community Center II at Uliastai Ger District of Ulaanbaatar city. The residency programs facilitate intercultural exchange between local and international artists, support their research and artistic projects and collaborations with local community and help in building long-lasting connections.

Living in Nomadic Red Corner residency is a unique opportunity, which allows artists to experience a traditional Mongolian, minimal lifestyle. Residency compound has two Gers designated as accommodation. Each Ger has 3 beds, wi-fi, kitchen amenities, sheets, towels, shelves, and other necessary supplies for accommodating 6 artists in total.
